Jay-Z honors Chester Bennington

Jay-Z held his only European concert of 2017 this weekend at Virgin’s V Fest in the U.K. The shows were Saturday at Weston Park in Staffordshire and Sunday at Hylands Park in Essex.

Jay-Z has been touring his 4:44 album lately and a majority of the music he performed at V Fest was from 4:44. However, at the conclusion of his set, Jay-Z payed tribute to his peer and friend, Chester Bennington, lead singer of Linkin Park, who committed suicide just one month ago and who’s music is so unique it cannot be categorized into only one genre.

In 2004, MTV had been planning a 2 or 3 song mash-up of between them that would go on a compilation album. It was inspired by an album Danger Mouse had done where he mashed up Jay-Z and the Beatles, called The Grey Album (a cross between Jay’s The Black Album and the Beatles’ The White Album.)

Ultimately Jay-Z and Linkin Park collaborated to record a six-song EP, titled Collision Course. The project was produced mostly by Linkin Park’s other vocalist and rapper, Mike Shinoda and Jay-Z. It was recorded in just 3 days, between July 16-19th and was released November 30, 2004. The only single generated from the EP was a song that combined Linkin Park’s “Numb” with Jay-Z’s song “Encore.” The album immediately went to #1 on the Billboard 200 and the single eventually won Best Rap/Sung Collaboration at the 2006 Grammy Awards.

So, on Saturday in Weston Park, as Jay was finishing his set, he asked the venue to turn the house lights down before he began the finale. Just as the music for “Numb/Encore” began, Jay-Z asked the audience, “Can you guys light it up for Chester from Linkin Park one time?” He then said, “Please make some noise so he can hear you all the way in heaven tonight.” Launching into the performance, the audience sang Chester’s entire part while Jay-Z played the role of hype man. I’m sure it was an amazing experience and a moment that festival goers will never forget.

But, Jay-Z hasn’t been the only celebrity to honor Chester Bennington. There have been outpouring tributes from Rihanna, Katy Perry, Stormzy, Jared Leto of 30 Seconds To Mars, One Republic, You Me At Six, Chance The Rapper, Nikki Sixx of Motley Crue, Pharrell Williams and the daughter of Chester’s best friend, Chris Cornell, lead vocalist of Soundgarden and Audioslave, who also tragically hanged himself just 2 months before Chester did the same.

We will miss you, Chester. What you brought to music can never be duplicated.
