This has been quite a year for Los Angeles based singer/songwriter, producer/engineer and DJ, Syd. The frontwoman for The Internet released her debut solo album earlier this year. Then, yesterday she dropped another solo EP, titled Always Never Home. The 3-song EP, although short, is everything that we’ve come to expect from the multi-talented 25 year old.
Sydney “Syd” Bennett was nicknamed Syd Tha Kyd as a child by her older brother, Ty. After outgrowing the name, she began using it again during her time with hip-hop collective, Odd Future. The group is known for throwing some very uniquely talented artists at us (Tyler The Creator, Earl Sweatshirt and Frank Ocean, to name a few) of which Syd and her brother, “Taco,” have been members. Syd announced her official split from the group on March 11, 2016.
On February 27, 2011, Syd self-released her debut instrumental EP, Raunchboots. Later that year, Syd and fellow Odd Future member, Matt Martians, formed hip-hop soul band, The Internet, which she currently still leads. The Internet has had 3 albums since 2011 and has been nominated for both a Soul Train Award and Grammy Award.
This past January, Syd released 2 singles in the 3 short weeks leading up to the release of her first solo project collaboration with Columbia Records, Fin, which debuted February 3rd. The album was amazing and brought back the way true R&B should feel. With great production, honest lyrics and Syd’s incredible voice, Fin widely received positive reviews from fans, as well as critics. Yesterday, her latest recordings dropped, a follow-up 3-track EP, titled Always Never Home. She also announced her upcoming tour of the same name. If you haven’t heard Always Never Home, take the time to do it now! I can’t wait to hear what she does next, I love her!
