I must have been on a million over the weekend when I came across a completely unexpected album release by one of my favorite artists, Jhene Aiko! The new album, Trip, is her first solo album since the release of Souled Out in September 2014.
Jhene Aiko has been very busy these last few years. Since early 2011, with the debut of her first full length mixtape, Sailing Souls, the 29 year old California native has been running non-stop. Later that same year, she signed to record producer No ID’s label, ARTium, through Def Jam and also became a member of the Alternative Hip-Hop/R&B group he founded, Cocaine 80’s, who put out 2 full length projects in 2011 alone. Cocaine 80’s then followed up with another 2 full length EPs in 2012 & 2013.
Ms. Aiko concurrently released her own solo EP in November 2013, her first through ARTium and Def Jam, tiltled Sail Out. The EP had smashes like “3:16am,” “Bed Peace” featuring Childish Gambino and the monster single, “The Worst” (one of my favorites), which was RIAA certified platinum. Then less than a year later, she released her first official album, Souled Out, on September 9, 2014. Not only has she spent time promoting her own endeavors, she’s been featured on many tracks from top artists and has also been on numerous tours with artists that include Miguel, Drake, Nas and Lauryn Hill, The Weeknd and also J. Cole.
But that’s not all….
Jhene Aiko and Big Sean had teamed up to create the super-duo, TWENTY88, who released their self-titled collaboration album on April 1, 2016. Since then she’s dropped a couple individual tracks of her own, that seemingly didn’t belong to any specific project and was featured on a few songs by artists such as 6lack and Chris Brown.
Then without any prior announcement, this past Friday a surprise new solo album, titled Trip, was released. The 22-track album, produced mostly by Jhene’s ex-husband, Dot Da Genius, is straight fire! The first song had me questioning what direction the album was about to go in, but the journey it leads you on is one that I’m glad I traveled. It has some amazing features on it too! There are appearances by Big Sean, TWENTY88, Swae Lee, Kurupt, Dr. Chill, Brandy, Mali Music and also Jhene’s daughter, Namiko Love. It is most definitely worth listening to, even as background music to whatever task you’re knocking off of your to-do-list. I’m sure we will all be waiting to see more from Jhene Aiko after this!
